Nicolas Ong
CS MSc Student @ UAlberta
Welcome
I'm a Computing Science MSc student at the University of Alberta, researching deep reinforcement learning at the Moving AI Lab under Nathan Sturtevant. Currently training AlphaZero on solved games (Chinese Checkers), and using solve data to investigate training dynamics.
Previously,
- 2024: Published a paper at NAACL 2024 on entity linking, from SFU's Natlang Lab
- 2021 - 2023: Software Engineer at Redmane Technologies
- 2018 - 2021: BSc Computing Science from SFU
My research interests center on understanding intelligence well enough to build intelligent systems. In particular, I'm interested in model-based methods in deep reinforcement learning, as they allow learning beyond their training data (or from scratch) through efficient exploration and planning.
Seeking research engineer or ML engineer roles, starting late 2026/early 2027. Seattle preferred. Canadian citizen.
